Project Background:
Recognizing the increasing frequencies of natural hazards in Nepal in general and in the proposed project areas in particular; understanding that these hazards turn up to become disasters because of high vulnerabilities and limited capacities of people to cope with them ;knowing that here has been huge impact of these disasters in the lives and livelihoods of people; and realizing that after the 2015 earthquake, efforts on Disaster Risk Management(DRM) is needed to prepare communities to face disasters and recovery of lost assets, project namely “Reaching Down and Scaling Up: Strengthening Community Resilience to Disasters is implemented in two of the worst affected VDCs in Nuwakot districts. Kintang and Bungtang VDC which lies in the north east of Nuwakot District was one of the hard to reach areas and worst affected by earthquake. The project is designed based on initial need assessment conducted in May aProject Objectives
Based on the assessment findings, the core problem related to DRM and recovery is: most vulnerable communities and their resource base are exposed to multiple hazards due to lack of integrated and inclusive measures on prevention of disasters, their mitigation and preparedness”. In order to address this core problem, AWO international believes that it is essential to “contribute towards community resilience to and recovery from disasters amongst vulnerable, at-risk and earthquake affected communities in Nepal”. This is the impact foreseen in the project.
Specific Objectives
The project makes 4 key strategic choices in order to contribute to achieve the intended impact foreseen by the project. These are the 4 specific objectives envisioned and include the following:
a) To raise awareness and Behavior Change Communication on disaster risks to the communities vulnerable to multiple hazards in Bungtang and Kintang Village Development Committees (VDCs) of Nuwakot district
b) To strengthened communities and authorities on inclusive disaster risk governance to manage risks from disasters with effective, low cost and replicable models
c) To support earthquake affected communities and the DRR stakeholders to have measures in place for preparedness for effective response and recovery
